He also records ideas for draining swamps, a subject on which his expertise was frequently sought. The writing has the flavor of a technical manual for hydraulic engineers. It is a far cry from his philosophical musings or evocative poetic descriptions about the body of the earth found elsewhere in the codex. Leonardo rarely makes sketches within the text, preferring to illustrate his major points in the outer margin with substantiating explanations.
